New offshore wind projects and proposalsOff-shore wind has not yet been deployed, but the race is on to get started with wind on the outer continental shelf.

  • far from people's back yards with visual and noise worries (realistic or not)
  • subject to very strong winds
  • closer to the coastal high-energy-demand regions than the onshore high-wind areas

  • higher cost of drilling into ocean bed and building and anchoring wind turbines in the ocean

Thanks for the update, David.

Hello, Susan. According to Scott Carlin, who is involved with Long Island's environment actions, it was costs getting out of control. Apparently the offshore costs for windmills are far higher than land-based costs, but there will be a new proposal coming along in the next year.

I am looking into the reason that the offshore wind farm was defeated. I remember some kind of letters like "NIMBY"....

As far as "green" (renewable, minimally-polluting) energy in places like New York City, what you are doing by paying for green energy is allowing your utility to buy green power in other locations where it is available. So by paying for environmentally sound energy, you are indeed supporting and making that kind of energy source more prevalent, even though you are not personally able to receive green energy.

I hope that helps!

Last year, or the year before, there was a proposal by someone for a wind farm off of LI, I think perhaps in the area south of Jones Beach. For some reason that I don't recall now, the kabash was put on that plan and now I'm wondering why?

In the spring I went to an energy fair at Grand Central Station (must have been Earth Day now that I'm thinking about it) and while there, was able to choose to have "my energy" generated by a wind farm in upstate NY. Realistically I know that the energy coming into my apatment isn't coming from a wind farm and I'm not sure I understand completely how this works, all I know is that I'm somehow contributing to a greener society by having signed up for this particular program.

I would love to one day live in a truly environmentally friendly environment, although I'm not sure that will happen in my lifetime.

I believe that the advancement of human well-being will reduce societies addictive behaviors, and will thus also help preserve the environment and perhaps slow down the effects of global warming and other major threats to the health of human societies.
