Mussel power!I was looking through Web sites on environment and science, as usual, and saw this headline:

What Causes Cell Defences To Crumble? Proteins In Mussels Act As Barrier To Toxic Environmental Chemicals

Now, as a former (current?) science guy, my first reaction was, "Oh, wow, how cool... maybe mussels have a secret that will benefit human life".

But then the more holistic aspect of my brain kicked in, the one that has grown and improved gradually with over 50 years of carefully marshalled life experience.

That part of my brain said, "Have we screwed up SO badly that we are now depending on some lowly creature (no offense to mussels) to rescue us through some weird extract of its essence?  Is our goal now to live in a sea of toxins but shake it off due to mussel extract?

Stating the obvious, what about a change in how we live, a clean friendly planet, blue skies, fresh air and water.

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one....

Excuse me while I daydream and recall the music of my younger years, and the idealism that was in the air forty years ago.

Yes, agreed, Tim. You know, you gave me another thought... the corporations have consistenly fought to maximize their own gain, but in doing so in a shortsighted way have created an imbalanced planet with lots of hidden "debts" i.e. to restore the whole planet to a healthy condition. Now that price is being paid, and the hidden debt to nature is beginning (just beginning) to surface - with the only unfortunate part being that everyone is getting drawn into the problem.

My Bad..I got too excited.

This sentence should have read "Since then events have only confirmed that not only has money become more important than people it's become more important than our PLANET!"

I'm just sittin here watchin the wheels go round and round, I really love to see them roll. (not)

I was passed a link to watch a two hour long video on consumerism, and our money based "economy". It brought to life some sentiments inside of me formed a long time ago where I observed that money was becoming more important than people. This was well before the "Information Age", but mechanization was beginning to displace people in my own back yard so to speak.

Since then events have only confirmed that not only has money become more important than people it's become more important than PEOPLE!

Funny you hear the major corporations scream about the cost to reduce greenhouse gases, and how our shareholders (you) will have to pay for it through decreased dividends, yet we didn't hear that same concern for shareholders as the biggies got their payouts and the shareholders got the sack!

The movie also caused me to think what's next? and then I see the pollution occurring still at an alarming rate..in fact although we've somewhat curbed pollution in our own backyard *(continent) third world countries and China are polluting at an increasing rate. And we keep buying their goods..

And I saw that perhaps what might be next (as you referred to in your article) maybe next we will have to buy ALL our drinking water from these guys after they've polluted ALL our rivers and lakes and oceans, and breathable air, after it becomes a soup of toxic gas. This is the time when we as citizens of the Planet Earth have to either take a stand or accept our fate, because if we leave it up to the Multi-Nationals we will soon be sipping purified water and breathing purified air..all supplied by THEM!

Member: PT (David Alexander) My lifelong pursuit, since age 18, has been to live more fully and find wisdom. This has involved studies with Zen masters, Tai Chi masters, and great psychotherapists while achieving my license as a gestalt therapist and psychoanalyst.

Along the way, I became aware of how the planet is under great stress due to the driven nature of human activity on this planet.

I believe that the advancement of human well-being will reduce societies addictive behaviors, and will thus also help preserve the environment and perhaps slow down the effects of global warming and other major threats to the health of human societies.
